Would a company hire a graphic designer who never went to school for that?
I went to a 4-year school as a theater major. My portfolio is decent, but I know very little about prepress and production techniques for printing. Also, I am not really experienced in Dreamweaver, AfterEffects, and Flash. I do know Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and much more – But I know nothing about actually putting things in print, in addition to the CMYK set. I just wonder how likely it is that I could be hired as a trainee position or entry-level to a typical ad agency or media business.
It is doable. It all comes down to your portfolio really. It is good that you know, these programs, they are what you need. I would recommend getting a good book on the prepress, there really much there who can explain the basics. Try to get an internship, you will learn many of the details that fill the gaps in your knowledge. Working for free if you must, you will at least make connections that will be useful when searching for references to work and learn many tips and techniques.
