CPAs are licensed by a State Board of Accounts. The vast majority of States require CPA candidates to be college graduates, but a substitute some states a number of years of experience in public accounting for a college diploma. In early 2005, on the basis of recommendations by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), 42 states and the District of Columbia required that candidates CPA to complete 150 hours during semester of college, 30 additional hours beyond the bachelor's usual 4-year. Five other states have adopted similar legislation which comes into force between 2006 and 2009. Colorado, Delaware, New Hampshire and Vermont are the only states that do not require 150 semester hours. In response to this trend, many schools have changed their programs accordingly, most programs offering a Master of the 150 hours, which represents prospective majors should carefully consider the accounting programs and requirements of the States where they hope to obtain a permit for additional information: information about careers in certified public accounting standards CPA and inspections may be obtained from: American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, 1211 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10036.
