What kind of reporting tools does Microsoft offer for business intelligence activities?

With regards processing the data, you will need SQL Server 2000 or 2005.
The following are available for analysis of the data.

For a very high level view of data KPI(key product indicators) you can get balanced scorecard (aka business scorecard). This gives a very simple ‘Fisher Price’ view of the data. e.g. a traffic light showing red to indicate a low share price.

To give more detail use Reporting Services, this allows users to create reports in a variety of formats (PDF, Excel, HTML, XML, CSV and also graphical) by simple parameter selection (drop downs or text entry) they can also subscribe to reports by email.

For a higher level of anaylsis you will need to use Pivot Tables (either in Excel or as part of the Office Web Components in Sharepoint) this allows you to slice and dice the data in cubes on the OLAP server. (You create cubes using Analysis Services – part of SQL Server, these have lots of precalculations of what you might want to know, precalculated to give better performance speedwise)

Finally you can also use Data Mining tools (in Analysis Services, much improved in SQL Server 2005) to spot trends and perform incredibly detailed statistical analysis of the data.

Most people tend to use something like ProClarity or MicroStrategy products in conjunction with the above Microsoft products, they allow easier and more powerful control of reporting functions for the users.
