Do business majors make a lot of money?

I think working for Apple would be so cool, or any other company similar to that. like being in marketing. I’ve wanted to be a doctor all my life but i’m exploring other options. I just have a couple questions…

1. Is business a hard major to get into?
2. Is there a lot of schooling?
3. What college has the best businness major?
4. Do they make a lot of money?
5. Does Apple hire a lot of people?

Business is not a particularly difficult major to get into overall as an undergraduate, although it depends upon the school to which you are applying. For example, Wharton (University of Pennsylvania) is listed by Business Week as the top undergraduate business program, but it is a small, extremely selective program. Other top schools may admit you to the university, and you have to do really well in your first two years in order to be admitted to the business school.

You can get a job with a bachelor’s degree, but many larger companies expect people eventually to get the MBA in order to move up, and that is another two years. The problem is that unlike with medical school, which most people do right after getting their bachelor’s degrees, the better schools require 3-5 years minimum of post-college full-time work experience before admitting you to their MBA programs.

Business majors make a wide range of salaries, depending upon what they do. Starting salaries for undergraduates are usually highest in accounting, finance, and sales. At the MBA level, higher salaries are in things like investment banking and consulting. You mention marketing, and you can do reasonably well in areas like brand management and professional selling, but if you want to go into advertising or retailing, get ready for REALLY low starting salaries.

Apple is just one company, so they don’t hire too many people each year, and most of those would be tech types. They do, of course, hire other types of managers, but I don’t see them as a huge source of jobs. I would caution you against getting your heart set on one company. I’ve seen students do that (Nike is the one I’ve seen most often), and almost invariably, they apply again and again and get nowhere. Keep your mind open, and you will certainly find a job doing something interesting.
