How much does the name or prestige of a school matter?
I’m having some trouble picking schools to apply to for next year…I’m kinda picky and really have only found one school I know for sure I like, which is Wright State (I’m from Ohio). Really I’m not 100% sure what I want to major in, but it will definitely be some type of business or marketing.
I’ve always had a solid GPA…around a 3.9-4.0 with weighted classes… and my ACT scores were high enough to get into a “better” school, but I’m not sure I want that.
My parents keep telling me once I graduate and get into the “real world” a degree from a school like Miami University of Oxford or Ohio Northern is going to get me a lot farther in my job search than a degree from Wright State. Are they full of it?
A better-named university may help with your job search, but what matters more is how you do and what you do. For example, a marketing firm looking to hire someone would probably pick someone with a strong GPA and a marketing major from Wright State over an English major with a 1.2 GPA from Harvard. The prestige of the school isn’t relevant when you take into consideration the major and the GPA of the student.
I would look into Wright State’s career services options and see if they will be able to help you find a job or internship when the time comes. Compare their career services to career services at Miami or Ohio Northern – your parents will probably be interested.
Also, since it looks like you’re in Ohio, maybe consider Ohio State. Their undergrad business program is highly ranked and they have a solid career services office. (I worked there for a year.)
