business start up costs

I would like to open a part-time business with minimal start-up costs. Any ideas?
I have a Biology & Chemistry degree, and am also very good with English (proofreading, etc., although I don’t have an English degree). I’d like to set up something on a part-time (evenings) basis to earn money, with a view to expanding (and quitting my day job) if the venture takes off.
I’ve thought of writing a book (not exactly a business, but quite a lucrative venture if it is successful), however I think it’s difficult to find a publisher and am shelving this idea for now.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Have you tried to offer your proof reading services to local college students for a per page/per paper fee?
No start-up costs except the flyers and some initiative.
