Singapore, over the past couple of years has rocketed sky high to become an international hub with booming businesses in all sectors and also in private and public schooling. Being ranked as the 4th most liveable city in South East Asia, the smallest island in Asia has been placed on centre stage attracting a great influx of foreign immigrants.
On September 16th 2009 the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong addressed 1,500 students at Nanyang Technological University on the growing changes the foreign immigrants have brought to the nation with its open-door policy. More than 100,000 foreigners have been admitted per year in recent years whilst Singapore’s economy was booming.
Mr Lee pointed out that it was an important issue to be discussed as it concerned the students and their future bring the pillars of the next generation to come. He reiterated that this was not a one off problem which could be settled like answering an exam paper. He said, it was a continuing issue with no final solution and an issue that required management and adjustment to policies which have to change with time and circumstances.
Whilst he stressed the importance of putting in greater effort at fostering integration with foreign immigrants, he emphasised that the interest of Singapore Citizens have always come first. And, he added that it was not a short term interest but a long term interest where we have to be mindful of how quickly the Singapore society could absorb and integrate new arrivals.
Mr Lee pointed out that while Singaporean understands the need for immigrants and foreign workers, there are some concerns given the large inflow in the last few years.
He summed up starting that we must have a sustained, calibrated flow of immigrants and recognize the sharp differentiation reflecting the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship at the same time not making it onerous for PR’s and non –residents so that no one want to come. Singapore’s constraint was not space but with its people and the country would benefit with more good people as it would generate new and creative ideas expanding space and creating more opportunities
From his address it appears there are radical issues of striking a balance which guards the interests of Singaporeans yet attracting foreigners to our nation. Since Singapore is not totally shielded from the cyclical ups and downs of the economy it appears we have to have the citizen’s interest paramount before foreigners come for their bite of the cherry
