State university of New York at Binghamton popularly known as Binghamton University was founded in 1946 as a branch of Syracuse University. It was split at 1950 and named Harpur University in honor of colonial teacher Robert harpur. It was the first to join SUNY (State University of New York) and was subsequently renamed as state university of New York at Binghamton at 1965.

The campus is located at vestal New York .The campus is spread over 887 acres with 120 buildings roughly, the 190 acre preserved forest with 6 acre wetland adjoining the university is a major attraction. The campus includes seven residential communities, a student center, the Library Tower, science complex, various academic buildings, two gymnasiums, and various athletic facilities. The library tower is the tallest building and it is present in the centre of the campus.

The admissions are based on middle 50 percent SAT score with an average score of 1265 (math + verbal). Middle 50 percent of students’ high school GPA is somewhere around 93.Binghamton university is the 5th most selective public university in America. For the Fall 2006 Semester, Binghamton University received over 22,000 applications for over 2,300 spots. The retention rate is 92% highest in SUNY system. University has 11,174 undergraduates and 2,844 postgraduates. 25% of the total students are from abroad.

The university is ranked 30th on U.S News and World report. The university is in the top plugs for the 11th consecutive year. The management is ranked in top 40 business schools by Business week. After graduation, 40-50 percent of students will continue on to graduate school, while the remaining 50-60 percent goes into the workforce. The Law School Placement ranges within 75-82 percent. The Vet-School and Optometry School has 100 percent placement. Binghamton University is the number three feeder to the Big Four accounting firms, and numbers two to the largest of the four. Medical School Placement: 65-70 percent. Apart from the academic record, it holds key status in American nation basketball.
