Etiquette in Eating

Some employees may invite the applicant for a dine-out interview at their favorite restaurant. In this approach they will evaluate the applicant according to its social, interpersonal skills and table manners.

Table manners really matter, as this will be your advantage over some other candidates. You also have to look fabulous like wearing a custom made shirts. Clothing in custom made shirts assures that it is measured personally for you. In this way, you can impress the host by seeing you in a smart mens shirts or skirts.

Upon receiving the invitation, check right away the restaurant that you are about to go. Check the style of their cuisine. So that you will know what to expect, for example Chinese and Japanese cuisine needs to use chopsticks in eating, while western cuisine uses spoon, fork and knife. If you happen to be going in a Chinese or Japanese Restaurant and you do not know how to use chopsticks, better choose finger-foods from the menu. But if do not have any choice, ask the server politely to give you a spoon and fork instead.

It is always good to do a research about the menu of the restaurant, so that you can prepare the dish you want to eat. But please do not order the most expensive food. Just go for the middle-priced dishes. You also need to know the location of the restrooms and wash area. Be polite to the host and as well as to the server, like saying “thank you” and “please”.

Start your way from the outside going to the inside if you see a lot of utensils on the table. Liquids are on the right while solids are on the left. As you sit down lay the napkin over your lap if everyone is seated. Always remember the basic rule; always keep your elbows off the table and do not talk if your mouth is full.

Lay the napkin on the arm of the chair if you want to leave the table. If you are finished eating, turn the fork and knife into the four ‘clock position. And remember to listen and participate in the conversation.

After eating, place the napkin on the table right next to your plate.Always allow the tab, tip and bills to be paid by the host. Give the host your warm appreciation and leave a follow-up note to show your interest in the job.
