names businesses
can I put actual names of businesses in my story?
I’m writing a story and I plan on publishing it. I don’t plan on talking negative about it or anything but if the characters go to McDonald’s or Wal-Mart can I say that in there?
It’s better not to.
But you can leave them in there for now and let your publisher decide. Stephen King uses actual business names in some of his novels, and I know some others do too. But they may have paid and gotten permission for its use — it’s not like they’d mention that!
It’s easy to come up with similar names, like MacDougals or Big Mart. It would actually give your story more character if it was a local business trying to ACT like the big name. (For example, I think MacDougals was the place in “Coming to America”, and that became a fun part of the story itself. Likewise with Chotchkie’s in “Office Space”, which mocked TGI Fridays so perfectly.)
