Earthlink – Adding a laptop Wi-Fi home network.
So … I have Earthlink cable modem. Recently I added a Buffalo 802.11g router so I can work from home using my laptop. No problems there. I plugged the router and had no problems accessing the net from my desktop and my laptop had no problem finding the wireless connection and use VPN access to access my work account. So … The next step was to dust off that old laptop Win98-SE in a corner and have it put in place for children to use. I installed a PC Card 802.11g. He seems to find my router and gain a valid connection. However, I do not seem to be able to see the outside world. For example, I can not open an external web page. Any clues as to what might be the problem?
Make sure there are no hard-coded settings network adapter in the Win98 box. Clear them, if are. Do not play with the settings of DHCP server another user suggested. The fact that two other machines work says that it's OK. Remember that Win98 support for PC Card slots is less than wonderful and support for wireless networks almost nil. You may need to upgrade to Win2K or XP to run it.
