small business administration information

What can you tell me about these so-called government subsidies?
My teacher told me about the Small Business Administration (SBA), which gives supposively you money and helps you start your business. We were talking about me wanting to start my own restaurant and she SBA said it helps people like me and my research on it and use it well I'm very happy because I really want to start my own business .. but how it works? Is it really free money? Please give me the information .. especially if you have tried this ..
