Once you have a good following (100-500 people) try to turn some of them into useful personal contacts. Real contacts are much more valuable than Twitter followers and are more likely to make you money. The question is then – How can your turn your Twitter followers into personal contacts? The first thing that you should do is use HootSuite to help you manage your Twitter account. It allows you to pre-schedule tweets for the week ahead and to automatically tweet every time that you add a new page to your blog or website.
You do no want to blatantly advertise when you are sending out your tweets, but you do want to subtly promote yourself. Basically, it is ok to self-promote so long as you are providing your followers with something of value. So, you want to mainly use tweets to link back to things that you have produced yourself. However, it is important to diversify your links and not link back to your own site constantly. Try writing posts as a guest on someone else’s blog, or write articles for other sites or article directories. This way your followers will be interested in following your tweets and will not tire of linking back to your site.
Proving yourself an expert in your field through diverse and worthwhile tweets will gain you a following. Any new followers of your tweets can be e-mail to you by HootSuite. You can then search their profile to see if they are worthy personal contacts and link them to your own blog or website. The final step for turning Twitter followers into personal contacts is to ensure that your website / blog clearly states your personal contact information (your email address and phone number as a minimum). You also want the Twitter followers who come to your site to not be one time visitors, so should make it easy for them to subscribe to your RSS feed and / or receive email updates when you publish a new page.
